Many of you know I studied Communications, specifically Public Relations in college. I then went on to work at
A. Tierney as their Public Relations Director for a number of years. Recently, different brands have reached out to me to help them handle their social media or public relations. It has been really fun getting back into the business I love!
Many people are confused about what the difference is between advertising, PR, social media, publicity, marketing, etc. I thought the example below might be helpful for many people. After all, most of us bloggers are working to "brand" ourselves in a sense, so it is a good idea to be informed. I hope this helps and I would love to hear your thoughts!
Advertising vs. PR
Have you been misinformed?
ADVERTISING
If the circus comes to town and you paint a sign that says -
"Circus Coming to Fairground Saturday",
that's ADVERTISING.
PROMOTION
If you put a sign on the back of the elephant and walk him into town,
that's PROMOTION.
PUBLICITY
If the elephant walks through the Mayor's flower bed,
that's PUBLICITY.
PUBLIC RELATIONS
If you can get the Mayor to laugh about it,
that's PUBLIC RELATIONS.
MARKETING
And if you planned the elephants walk,
that's MARKETING.
And if the Mayors wife freaks out because an elephant just ruined her garden and tweets
"garden party cancelled, elephant in flower garden"
and takes a video and pictures and posts on
Facebook, Twitter and YouTube,
that's SOCIAL MEDIA!
